You can start biking in the Zugspitze region already in the spring months. In summer you can reach even higher altitudes with a mountain bike or e-bike. That way, you will find an impressive choice of mountain roads and paths in all difficulty levels.
Be it racy downhill treks, high altitude tours that make you sweat, or beautiful panorama routes, - the two wheels are a great way to discover the beauty of the Alps. Don't forget to take your ID with you on cross-border trips.
Mountain bike & e-bike
Mountain bikes and e-bikes meet the requirements for a great variety of intensive and sophisticated tours in different altitudes. Here a number of popular MTB tours in the region (all tour links in German):
- Eibsee MTB Trail (31.5 km - ascent 1 289 m - difficult)
- From Garmisch to Esterbergalm Chalet (26.7 km - ascent 1 148 m - medium)
- The Wetterstein Circular Tour (84.6 km - ascent 1 930 m - difficult)
- From Garmisch to Hochalm Chalet and Osterfelderkopf Summit (34 km - ascent 1 459 m - difficult)
- Plansee Circular Tour (65 km - ascent 699 m - medium)
- Karwendel Circular Tour (64 km - ascent 1 700 m - difficult)
- Der Alpenrandklassiker (33.5 km - ascent 960 m - difficult)

In the summer season, the Tourist Office in Grainau offers guided mountain bike / e-bike tours for those that don't want to look in their tour map or GPS device all the time.
The following cablecars in the Zugspitze area offer an opportunity to take your bike with you:
- Garmisch-Partenkirchen: Eckbauer-Bahn (in German)
- Oberammergau: Kolbensattel
- Tiroler Zugspitzarena: all cablecars
Bike Racing & Touring
Blue lakes, green meadows, fantastic views, natural and cultural monuments: for all those who love longer, extended bike tours there is a great variety of circular runs you can elongate to your liking:
- Hotel am Badersee – Staffelsee (easy)
Over Grainau – Garmisch-Partenkirchen – Farchant – Oberau – Eschenlohe and Murnauer Moor. From Murnau back to Grainau by train.
- Hotel am Badersee – Wallgau (easy to medium)
Over Grainau – Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Take a train to Scharnitz (Austria). From Scharnitz the route goes slightly uphill over the wild and romantic gorges and lush green alpine meadows to the Isar source (Isarquelle). Over the sunny Hochtal with beautiful panoramas of the Karwendel and Wetterstein chains you will arrive to Mittenwald and further to Wallgau. The return trip goes by bus or by bike over Krün, Klais and Kaltenbrunn back to Garmisch-Partenkrichen.
- Bichlbach – Hotel am Badersee (easy)
Take a train from Untergrainau Station to Bichlbach-Berwang (Austria) and from there follow the directions to Grainau over Lermoos and Griesen. After a light ascend at the beginning, the route goes steadily downhill, mostly over a designated cycle path.
- The big circular route over Oberammergau – Murnau (medium to difficult)
Hotel am Badersee – Garmisch-Partenkirchen – Farchant – Ettal – Oberammergau – Bad Kohlgrub – Murnau – Eschenlohe – Oberau – Farchant – Garmisch-Partenkirchen – Hotel am Badersee.
Bike paradise at Kolbensattel
The Bikepark in Oberammergau is a special highlight for mountain bikers. Beside the 6 trails that wriggle endlessly through the mountain forest, the Bikepark offers a pump track, a training parcours, a bike shop and a mountain biking school, along with a cafe and a bar.
Family bike tours
Family friendly bike tours are available to visitors in the Zugspitze area as well. In the first turn take a look at the Loisach Valley circular tour or the route from Bichlbach and Lermoos back to Grainau (arrival to the start point by train from Untergrainau Station).
Ask for guided family tours at the Tourist Office Grainau.
If you are unwilling to bring the bulky bikes with you, the Hotel am Badersee offers a rent-a-bike service. Rent a mountain bike or an e-bike to explore the neighbourhood. Please contact the reception regarding bike rental. This offer is valid in the summer season (from spring to early autumn).
